Canary Islands

Our trip to Tenerife in the Canary Islands was very relaxing. We were there 10 days, good amount of time to fully relax and have the "ready to return" home feeling. The trip started at a vacation rental but about three days in we moved to the Sheraton La Caleta Resort. Lesson learned...vacation rentals are not the same as vacation rentals at the beach at home. The place didn't have hot water or AC, seems like that would be okay taking cold showers in a hot house, definitely not! When we arrived at the Sheraton everything turned around and we had a wonderful vacation. The resort was perfect for children and everyone was extremely nice.
The Canary Islands are located off the coast of Africa but since it's a Spanish island the main language is Spanish. I know a little bit of Spanish from college so that helped. It was really cool to finally be somewhere and be able to say a few phrases! The weather was beautiful, just very hot during the day. During the night there was a really nice cool breeze. The weather was like dessert weather, I guess because we were so close to Africa.

Canary is known for its really fresh seafood and these small boiled potatoes called, Canary potatoes.. They are served with two types of sauces, one green and one red. Both muy delicioso! My favorite meal was on the last night of vacation. We went to a recommended restaurant that specialized in fish cooked in salt. What an experience! The fish was brought to the table whole covered in I think sea salt. The waiter scaled this local Canary fish called Sama right at our table and placed it right on our plate! The Sama wasn't salty at all. I'll have to say it was the best fish I've ever had!

Savannah met a few nice children from Spain and England that she played with everyday. There was a kids club with a kids pool where there were activities all day. We took her for about an hour everyday.

There were many things to do on the island like going to the top of an active volcano and visiting one of the best water parks in the world, Siam Park. Instead of sight seeing and enduring the heat around the island we decided relaxation was our top priority so we lounged by the pool and played on the beach all day. Truly one of the most relaxing vacations ever!

We really enjoyed Canary and hope to return to before we leave Europe. Enjoy the pictures!

  1. The technique is called a salt dome, you can even do it yourself at home!
