Savannah Turns 2!

We kicked off Savannah's birthday weekend on Friday, May 25th with a trip to Domäne Mechtildshausen to see the horses and animals and then have a late breakfast with our one of best buddies Sandie and her son Isaac. Domane is a local farm with a market, bakery, butcher, cafe and restaurant. It is one of our favorite places here. The food at their cafe is unbelievably fresh and since Savannah loves their bacon it was the perfect start to her weekend!

The weather was beautiful so we sat outside. Feeling confident with the German I've been learning I ordered our breakfast in German. I had eggs with bacon, and had a Savannah a waffle and bacon. It is custom here for waffles to come with a side of vanilla ice cream. So I made sure to order strawberries instead of the ice cream, 11am was just too early for ice cream! Well along the way there was a miscommunication and my German/English failed and Savannah's waffle came with ice cream and no strawberries. So Savannah had ice cream and bacon for lunch and wouldn't even touch the waffle! It was her birthday weekend and she was in heaven with this unexpected treat so we just went with it. :)

The following day, Saturday, we prepared for her birthday party at the playground and gave her BIG 2 year old present! We got her a balance bike and helmet. All the little children here have these bikes without training wheels. It is so cute to see them riding along gliding down the street. Savannah relied on Rocky to push her down the street. And she somewhat got the hang of having to walk with the bike. It will be a while before she starts balancing and gliding. The smile on her face when she first saw the bike was priceless!

During the weekend Savannah told us all day she was "2" and said her version of Happy Birthday which comes out like "Happy do-dee"! She even shows you how old she is with her pointer finger and thumb. This is actually how Germans say the number two with their hands. So she fits right in here! More German customs we learned from our friends are that Germans don't celebrate birthdays until the actual birthDAY or thereafter. It is considered very bad luck to do so before. Also, at birthday parties, you sing happy birthday and have cake first and then eat later. I think they have this absolutely right. I mean why wait until the end to have cake!? We might take this tradition back to the States.

Sunday we had a small party for her at the playground with all her best friends. The weather was a little cloudy but the sun came out as the party started. There were 5 children total all around the age of 2. It was really sweet to see them all play together! Savannah passed out plates and her cupcakes to everyone when it was time to sing Happy Birthday. She didn't eat much because she was overwhelmed with all the excitement. She really enjoyed carrying around a dog balloon that Isaac brought for her. This balloon was a huge hit to all the kiddos. We had a great party with great friends!

The next day, Monday the 28th was her actual birthday. We spent the morning with her best girlfriend Julia at the playground. Her and Julia played for hours in the sand and water and climbed all over the playground. At one point Savannah was walking up the water spout with only a shirt and diaper on. She got really into it! Then in the afternoon, we made her birthday cake together and enjoyed her favorite dinner...pasta! We sung happy birthday to her with family on skype. She loved every minute! She talked about it for days after.

I posted pictures from our weekend, enjoy! I can't believe Savannah is now 2 years old!
